David Cameron to German diplomat: Phoren politicians and their love for Bollywood

Who doesn’t like a dash of desi in their life? Well, everyone in India who is either posh or aspires to be posh. However, the moment you go beyond our subcontinent, brown appears to be warmest colour. All thanks to the dubious pleasures of Bollywood.
For instance, Europe just can’t get enough of Indian kitsch, it seems. Recently, we saw Abhishek Bachchan accompany Labour MP Keith Vaz on the latter’s campaign trail in Leicester. Junior B reportedly answered questions on football and his career (that part must have been short-lived), and basically wooed Vaz’s Indian vote bank. Though as far as those wooing efforts go, that tight-fitted suit that Bachchan was wearing may have been self-defeating.
It seems the Conservatives didn’t want to leave things to chance and the potential impact of Bachchan’s sartorial ineptitude. Lest the Indian-origin Brits get carried away and vote for Labour instantly, a Hindi music video featuring David Cameron and his wife has been released which might well convince viewers that Cameron was born in Ludhiana instead of London.
Titled Neela Hai Aasman, the video for this original number sees Cameron and wife shake it like desis do. There's the London Eye, followed swiftly by a shot of the Golden Temple for good measure; she’s wearing saris; he’s folding his hands and bowing before babas and gurus.
Cameron makes chapatis, pays his respects to the Prabhupada, matha thhekos in a gurdwara, hands a carnation (awkwardly) to a popular guru, does many namastes and finally, the tour de force: stands shoulder to shoulder with Narendra Modi, Arun Jaitley, Amitabh Bachchan and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. (Not altogether, fortunately or unfortunately.)

Kalavati, Dalit dinners, and now 'jai kisan': There's nothing new about populist Rahul 2.0

Two speeches in the Parliament, one brief intervention, a trek to Kedarnath, a visit to a Delhi hospital where Gajendra Singh died after hanging himself at an AAP rally and a trip to Punjab in the cattle class of a train.
By Rahul Gandhi’s career strike rate, this much activity would have been sufficient for at least four years. But after warming the backbench for almost a decade, Rahul seems to have made up his mind: he is going to get out in the field and score quickly.
Rahul’s frenzied—by his laidback standards and rare cameos—political activity since his return from the latest sabbatical is a clear indication that he has made the transition from a reluctant, part-timer to a professional politician. Rahul has sorted himself. Now that he has said 'I do', you can expect Sonia Gandhi to soon pass on the president’s crown to him and walk into the sunset; little sister Priyanka—like father Rajiv who made way for brother Sanjay—can wait.
Now that the decade-old dilemma of ‘will, he won’t he’ has ended, it is time to move to the next question: can Rahul 2.0 (or whatever version it is) make it as a politician? Can he succeed after a string of failures?
Rahul may have reinvented himself, but he is not trying to reinvent the wheel of Congress politics. Like grandmother, the only Gandhi to have made a successful comeback, he has gone back to the formula of politics of farmers, garib and yatras.
Left-leaning politics, championing the cause of the poor and the underprivileged is an old Congress template. It worked well for the Congress for several years, before Narendra Modi’s neo-liberalism and strategy of carrying the middle-class and urban India along trumped it in the 2014 election.
There is no guarantee that Rahul will succeed just because Indira did. But you can see that he is trying to carve out a constituency for himself. His repeated references to farmers, their problems; attempts to talk about them at available forum are indications of Rahul’s desire to speak to the rural voter and those who live on the margins of urban India.
In theory, this isn’t a bad strategy. As pointed out by Firstpost earlier, the Congress has realised it doesn’t stand much of a chance with the urban middle class and elite. It knows its existing culture of dynasty-based entitlements and politics of doles and freebies is largely unacceptable to this section.
But the Congress believes the Narendra Modi government has given it an opening by acquiring the reputation of being pro-corporate and anti-poor. Modi’s monogrammed suit, the controversy over the land acquisition bill and his frequent foreign jaunts have convinced the Congress that it can revive itself by restarting the debate around haves and have-nots and making the PM seem like a representative of the rich and the privileged.
Several ground reports, including the latest cover story in Outlook, suggest farmers are getting disenchanted with Modi. The noise around the land-acquisition bill, the agrarian crisis in the country and the inadequate government response to crop damage due to rain and hailstorms has made rural India uneasy.
There is anger brewing among Jats, who play an important role in the elections in at least four north India states: Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and UP. In Rajasthan, the Congress is making inroads because of the failure of Vasundhara Raje’s government to live up to expectations. In Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal has become a poor caricature of himself.
The iron is red hot.
So, Rahul is trying to highlight this Bharat vs India divide; to position himself as a politician worried about the hinterland in comparison to the PM who cares very little for India. “Pradhan Mantri ji ka Hindustan mein tour laga hai, kuch dino ke liye woh yahan aaye hain. He should now go to Punjab to speak farmers,” Rahul said in Parliament on Wednesday. Though borrowed, this is another soundbyte like the ‘suit-boot ki sarkar’ jibe that would have the desired impact.
The problem with Rahul’s strategy is that he is been there, done that before. His faux anger, speeches, train yatras, aam aadmi acts all give a sense a déjà vu. Almost a decade ago, he had made Kalavati the country’s talking point, several years ago he had made night-halts at the homes of Dalits and farmers and ridden on pillion to villages to interact with people. Not even the stubble has changed.
But none of this added any gravitas to Rahul’s political image or on the electoral prospects of the Congress. The rare night-outs in rural India were seen as sabbaticals and PR events because Rahul lacked consistency of approach and sincerity of purpose. After every visit to a village, he would disappear for long periods, often for a foreign holiday. And rarely did he follow an issue or put in the required political struggle to take it to a logical conclusion.
Rahul is lucky that he is getting another chance. The media is giving him importance, cameras are following him and newspapers are putting him in headlines. Amongst people, there is renewed interest in him, even if just out of curiosity. Rahul’s redemption lies only in being consistent and faithful to the politics he is pursuing. If he runs away again, abandons the cause he has picked up, this could well turn out to be his last act.

A friend in need: India, China turn on 'aid diplomacy' in Nepal

4:14:00 PM Posted by Unknown , , ,
DHADING/KATHMANDU: At a 12-bed hospital deep in Nepal's Himalayan mountains, Indian Air Force helicopters bring in the casualties of a devastating earthquake that has killed more than 4,000: injured men, women and children plucked from hilltops and inaccessible valleys.

In the capital Kathmandu, Chinese rescuers in red uniforms have been searching for survivors in the rubble. Television footage on Tuesday showed one crew pulling a man from the wreckage of a hotel, carrying him gingerly on a stretcher.

Nepal's government has struggled in the wake of the country's worst earthquake in nearly a century, its officials have been largely absent from public view. Not so India and China: both promised rescuers, sniffer dogs, tents and food within hours, winning praise from stranded Nepalis.

"We have no faith in our government, only India and (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi are helping us," said villager Dhruba Kandel in Dhading. "If it were not for these helicopters, people would be dying on the mountains by the dozens.

Congress demands probe against BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur

Congress on Monday latched on to a report of BJP MP Anurag Thakur socialising with a suspected bookie to demand probe by an independent agency into the link between him, BCCI and the bookies.

Party spokesperson Sushmita Dev told reporters that the International Cricket Council (ICC) writing a letter to the Indian Cricket Board was a serious matter as Thakur is the BCCI Secretary. Noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi often said that neither he will resort to corruption, nor allow others to do so, she said, therefore, it was imperative that he ordered an inquiry into the issue.
he also claimed that India's biggest betting-cum-hawala racket running into over Rs 4,000 crore has been unearthed last month in Gujarat. He alleged clear linkages to BJP leaders and police machinery in the state. Another party spokesperson Tom Vadakkan, however, steered clear of questions over the Special Investigation Team (SIT) monitoring the probe into Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board or Vyapam scam telling the high court that the documents used by AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh to target Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan are forged.

Vadakkan said that the whole issue is a matter of probe and the party would not comment till a report comes.

Rahul Gandhi to go on another holiday

9:32:00 AM Posted by Unknown , , , ,
With his speech in support of farmers and net neutrality Rahul Gandhi seemed to have won many hearts. It looked like he had turned over a new leaf and was no more the childish Rahul Gandhi who used to be lambasted by the opposition parties for his silly remarks.

Everyone thought he has finally come of age and the Congress leaders who had defended him on news channels for eons, felt exhilarated. But all those hopes seem to be futile as Rahul Gandhi has decided to go on a holiday again.

"I got bored after delivering all those speeches," Rahul said, yawning. "I don't think politics is my passion and since I am still young at 43 and with no responsibilities whatsoever, I think I should spend more time travelling so that I can find my real calling in life. Right now the media is busy with Salman Khurshid's act in the German version of "Kal Ho Na Ho" and by the time they get over it, I will be long gone. I'm a bit confused regarding which country I should visit next, so I think I will take advice from Narendra Modi as he has been on a travelling spree ever since he became Prime Minister."

Some of the BJP members chuckled upon hearing Rahul's travel plans. "Rahul Baba must be really tired after giving couple of speeches and so he must travel for months to rejuvenate himself again. If he wants to compare himself with Narendra Modi then he should remember that our PM signs important deals and does work on foreign tours which is far more important than watching cartoons and doing pseudo women empowerment work which seem to be Rahul Baba's favorite pastime," quipped one of the BJP members.

'PM Paying Back Industrialists Who Helped Him,' Says Rahul Gandhi at Farmers' Rally

NEW DELHI:  With Rahul Gandhi back from his two-month sabbatical, the Congress launched a full-fledged attack on the BJP government at a big rally of farmers in Delhi today, bringing out its heavy artillery against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed land reforms.

"I want to tell Modi, enough is enough. The country's farmers and workers have seen through his empty promises," said Congress president Sonia Gandhi in her speech at Delhi's Ramlila grounds, where most political protests are held in the capital.
She spoke right after her son and deputy Rahul Gandhi, for whom today's rally is seen as kicking off a comeback. About 80,000 people attended, in a show of strength by the opposition party, which is attempting a political resurrection after humiliating defeats in last year's national elections and multiple state polls thereafter.

Central to those plans is Rahul Gandhi, who his party said was away for 57 days to "introspect." Today, he attacked PM Modi and his government over the land acquisition bill, which makes it easier to acquire land for industrial and key infrastructure projects.

"'Make in India' is Modiji's dream that will not work. They will take away your land and you will have no other employment," said Rahul Gandhi, also alleging, "I tell you how Modi ji won the election. He took loans of thousands of crores from big industrialists from which his marketing was done. How will he pay back that loan now? He will do it by giving your land to those top industrialists. He wants to weaken the farmers, then snatch their land and give it to his industrialist friends."

Both Sonia and Rahul Gandhi accused PM Modi of "abandoning" farmers. "The Modi government is anti-poor, anti-farmer. We will now fight and not let those forces win which want to destroy us. We might not be in govt but there will be no setback in our efforts for you," Mrs Gandhi said.

Parliament's Budget Session - the first part of which Mr Gandhi controversially skipped - reconvenes tomorrow. The Congress, which has a majority in the Rajya Sabha or Upper House and had blocked the land bill last month, and is set to do the same when it is introduced again.

Some time before the Congress rally began, PM Modi addressed a workshop of his party's MPs, projecting his government as pro-poor and pro-farmers and lashing out at his critics for their "congenital habit" of running down the BJP.

After the Congress rally, the BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad took a dig at Rahul Gandhi, saying, "Did the Congress introspect at all? And even if they did, they couldn't come up with a new speech? I think Congress has made up its mind to lose with a worse margin the next time." courtesy: ndtv

Sonia, Rahul call Modi govt’s policies anti-poor and anti-farmer

New Delhi: The Congress party, in one of its biggest public rallies in the national capital in the recent past, launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, criticizing the policies of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government as being anti-farmer and anti-poor.
Addressing the public, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi said that the policies and the intention of Prime Minister Modi were suspect.
“They will take your land, they will not give you jobs and you will fall nowhere. Wherever there is forcible land acquisition, you will find a Congress leader around you, a youth worker around you and you will find me,” Rahul Gandhi, who made his first public address in two months, said at New Delhi’s Ramlila Grounds on Sunday.
